Week 1 · what the barrow already holds
Load the barrow for the path you have. Not the one you wish you had.
Barrow Keep is a small reference for people adding a second, smaller income to a full working week. We don't sell courses, tools or coaching. Most side-income advice starts with what to add. We start with what you already carry, and how much more the week can take before something tips.
Load chart
How heavy each kind of side work is to carry.
This chart weighs common side work by what it asks of your week, not by what it pays. We leave pay out on purpose: rates vary too much by country, platform and experience to print one honestly.
| Work | Weight | Loading up | Carrying it weekly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data entry and simple online tasks | light | An account and a test task | Steady, can stop and start, low pressure |
| Reselling things you no longer use | light | Photos and listings for a few items | Replies and trips to the post office |
| Answering messages for a small shop | medium | Learning the shop's policies | Fixed hours that someone relies on |
| Proofreading or editing | medium | Samples and a clear rate sheet | Deadlines that don't move for your job |
| Weekly live tutoring | heavy | Materials, a quiet room, a profile | The same slot every week, even when tired |
| Building and stocking your own shop | heavy | Money for stock, packaging, accounts | Orders, returns, stock counts and tax records |
Ruts in the path
Where the wheel tends to catch.
None of these are reasons not to start. They're the things readers say they wish they'd seen coming in the first month.
- FEES
Some of the load falls off on the way.
Platforms and payment services keep a share of each sale or payout. Read the fee page before you start.
- TAX
Part of each payment isn't yours.
Side income is usually taxable, even in small amounts. Put a share aside from the first payment and check your tax authority's rules.
- SLEEP
Short nights add up quickly.
Hours taken from sleep come back as mistakes, at the side work and at the day job.
- CONTRACT
Your employer may have a say.
Some employment contracts limit outside or competing work. Read yours and ask HR about anything unclear.
- FRAUD
Offers that cost you to start.
Anyone asking you to pay a fee, buy a kit, or move money for them is not offering work. Walk away and report it.
